Newport-Mesa Selects Coordinators of Student Services and Data Systems

Welcome new staff

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) announces Joy M. Cordia as the coordinator of data system support and staff development, and Dr. Jennifer Piña as a coordinator of student services.

In this position, Joy will be coordinating and facilitating professional development for certificated and classified staff related to our student information system (Aeries), master schedule, and California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CalPADS). 

Cordia has nearly 20 years experience in education, most recently serving as an assistant principal for the past nine years in Brea Olinda Unified School District. As an assistant principal, she has had a wide variety of experiences including, curriculum and instruction,, assessment and accountability, and business services. Her previous experience as mathematics coordinator for the Orange County Department of Education, writing curriculum, providing professional development, and working with various partners also will be an asset in this new role.

Cordia has extensive experience in implementing professional development programs and training for  teachers and staff specific to state standards, student information systems and master schedule, classroom instruction, and learning assessment practices. In addition, she has worked with various groups including school site leadership teams, school site council, and professional learning communities to monitor student progress and college readiness. 

“We are excited to welcome Joy to our team,” said Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Kerrie Torres. “Joy’s instructional and curriculum knowledge coupled with her extensive site experience using student information systems will be a great benefit to the district.” she said.

Cordia is known as a thoughtful student-centered leader who is detailed and process oriented.

Cordia obtained her Masters in Education from Concordia University; her Administrative Credential from Brandman University (now known as UMass Global); and her Bachelor of Arts with multiple subject credential from California State University, Fullerton

Dr. Jennifer Piña, Coordinator of Student Services

Dr. Piña joined Newport-Mesa Unified School District in 2003 as a teacher at Costa Mesa High School (CMHS) and is currently an assistant principal at Corona del Mar High School. For seven years she served as an assistant principal at Newport Harbor High School and previously  as a teacher on special assignment (TOSA) providing her with expertise and experience in a variety of District processes, including 504, student behavior support and student social-emotional support.

As coordinator of student services, Dr. Piña will collaborate with school site administrators to develop and coordinate student services programs to optimize student success. This includes bullying prevention and intervention, discipline, and restorative practices. Additionally, she will provide training to district staff to support the implementation of the programs.

“Dr. Piña’s collaborative relationships with colleagues and passion for implementing student support programs will undoubtedly benefit our District,” said Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services Dr. Sara Jocham. 

Dr. Piña obtained her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administrative Credential from the University of Southern California; her Master of Arts in Education from National University; and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Loyola Marymount University.
