Construction and Maintenance Upgrades Around the District

As we enter the “home stretch” of the school year, Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) facility and maintenance teams continue to progress on construction and maintenance projects throughout our schools. See below for the status of current projects and recently completed projects. 


RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTS 

CORONA DEL MAR HIGH SCHOOL

Sports Fields

The project consisted of two lighted artificial turf sports fields, one with a synthetic track. It also includes bleachers and scoreboards as well as fencing, gates, and pathways. Please watch this two-minute video in commemoration of the completion of this project.

Enhancements included:

  • Installation of permanent fencing along the perimeter of the school. 

    • The front entrance to the high school, student parking lot (adjacent to the pool and Learning Resource Center (LRC)), and parts of the fencing near the baseball field/middle school entrance have ornamental fencing, while other sections remain chain-link including replacement of the existing six-foot chain-link fence along Mar Vista Drive and Vista Del Oro with a new, permanent eight-foot chain-link fence. 

  • Reconfiguration of the school bus pick-up/drop-off along Mar Vista Drive to allow construction of additional sidewalks.

  • Reconfiguration of the student parking lot near the pool and LRC for accessibility enhancements.

  • Construction of a new entry structure at the athletic entrance adjacent to the pool and LRC.

The upgrades to the campus were designed to improve safety and traffic flow to/from school, and eliminate the need for off-campus parking while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing and welcoming environment.

 

COSTA MESA & ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL

Tennis Courts

Replacement of tennis court chain link fencing, including posts, footings, and chain link mesh. New gates and concrete walkways, where necessary, for access. Resurfacing and restriping improvements as well as relocation of electrical to underground distribution.

Security Fence and Parking 

The project included a variety of upgrades, including:

  • Replacement of temporary fencing with permanent fencing

  • Reconfiguration of the existing parking lot

  • Construction of an additional parking lot along Irvine Avenue to accommodate approximately 45 parking spaces

  • Construction of a new drop off zone at the front of the school. The drop off zone, known as the “banana lot”, includes a one-way drop-off/pick-up lane which minimizes traffic congestion on City streets, and approximately 20 parking spaces

  • Remodel of the front office to improve visibility and access control

  • Additional landscaping and shrubbery 


CURRENT PROJECTS

ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL 

Theater project

Theatre

This project is currently completing the design phase and includes a new 350 seat theater, black box, lobby, and support spaces. The design phase was completed in late 2020. The project was submitted to the Division of State Architect for approval.

Ideally, a successful construction bidder will be identified by Fall 2021, and construction would continue through 2023.

NEWPORT HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL HOME ARTS

This project includes modernization of the existing courtyard in the Home Arts Building at Newport Harbor High School. This includes improvement in accessibility, drainage, landscaping as well as the kiln yard, equipment, and roof structure.

The project is currently in the design phase.

DISTRICTWIDE MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS

Our Maintenance and Operations department also has continued to upgrade and maintain schools and District facilities throughout the school year.  Some enhancements and upgrades that will continue at various schools through spring and summer, include:

  • Asphalt maintenance 

  • Paint and pave parking lots

  • Paint exterior and interior buildings

  • Refinish gym floors

  • Replace flooring and roofing

  • Surface Playgrounds

  • Install digital marquees
